Structure: a private building for residential use located in Castel San Pietro Terme (BO) built in the 1950s and renovated in 1980 consisting of two above-ground floors plus a cellar located in the north corner, with solid brick walls, cement-late concrete floors and wooden beam roof structure.
Foundations: concrete attested at a depth of – 1.15 to – 1.25 m from the ground floor; in the cellar room, the foundations are bagged, compact and attested at a depth of – 0.40 m from the ground floor; in 1980 the perimeter of the building was consolidated with 54 reinforced concrete piles hooked with brackets to the foundation; the northern corner was probably excluded from the consolidation. In 2017, a consolidation by Lift-Pile was performed in the northern area of the building with micropile lengths from 9 to 15 m. The floor consists of a 35-cm-thick reinforced screed.
Failure: the lesion network (single- and multiple-branch inclined, sub-horizontal and sub-vertical) produced by shear and bending stresses corresponding to asymmetrical deformations, shows shear-flexure type ruptures with phase of detachment motion, with relative type of motion, and classifies the failures as relative terminal differential vertical translations in the southeast direction.
Soil: from information gathered during the inspection and from the results of the penetrometry performed by Novatek srl SB, it appears the presence of clayey-silty soils and/or vice versa, which from an elevation of – 15 m from the ground level register a considerable increase in strength values. Clayey soils are subject to phenomena of volumetric shrinkage and contraction due to drying of surface lithotypes and subsequent swelling as a result of seasonal climatic and rainfall trends. These phenomena are accentuated in the dewatering action exerted by the suction of tree roots in the vicinity of the building, in leaks or dispersions of water or sewage systems, and in the inadequate regulation of downspout drainage water; for the above-mentioned phenomenologies, careful verification and eventual, prompt restoration are recommended.
